A Fine Victorian Mahogany Wall Regulator signed M. F. Dent, 33 Cockspur Street, Charing Cross, London, No. 25286, circa 1870.
51 in. [130 cm] H
The rectangular movement has five pillars secured by screws, dead beat escapement with adjustable jeweled pallets, crutch with beat adjustment, maintaining power, the barrel wound through the side of the case by means of an arbor and bevel gear, Dent's version of Graham's mercurial pendulum with steel jar, silvered 60 - minute dial with subsidiary second and hours, blued steel hands; within a glazed mahogany vitrine on a mahogany back board with separate mounting brackets for the movement and pendulum.
Mercer (plate 147) illustrates a regulator of identical design, no. 1604, retailed by E. Dent, 61 Strand. The supplier is unrecorded, but he must have made these regulators for both firms. A two number gap in the list of watch suppliers to M. F. Dent for 1866 - 1867 corresponds to this clock. |
